iv been asked by some friends lately on the "supposed" rice crisis. of course i get the most common "is there really a rice crisis?" inquiry to the more chismis-type "ui, is that ur boss on tv patrol? he looks cute!no wonder ur still stuck there despite the small pay youre getting." ok, ok. now there's the rub!
so to set things straight, let me discuss it in layman's term ayt?
1. the problem is we have fucking hoarders. big millers in isabela.everywhere.expose na ito!haha. but thats the truth. they have huge, huge bodegas up there... all brimming with tons of rice.but hey, NFA doesnt know about it, yeah?so they keep the huge, huge bodegas brimming with tons of rice locked. the gates only open up to loading trucks.
2. increased fuel cost in the world market. fuel is essential in palay production. farm machineries used to plow the field and harvest the crop need fuel to run. trucks need fuel to transport palay from the farmers' field to the market. and they dont only transport the palay ok? the fertilizers and chemicals too. machines that will mill the palay need fuel. machines need the damned fuel. (i feel like im a machine sometimes pero buti na lang i dont run on oil. or else. nyahaha.) so there. you spend more in producing palay and therefore you have to sell it at a higher price to get some profit.
3. the biofuel mania. there is a high demand for biofuels and some farmers decided to grow crops that produce biofuels instead of rice. you get the drift now, ayt?
4. climate change. some parts are getting dried up, while some parts of the world are getting drenched. crop losses. when climate changes, pests and diseases crop up too. its an all-star cast of beasts that eat up the plant before it gets harvested.
why cant we produce enough rice supply for the country?
1. because our country's geography doesnt have any major river deltas that can irrigate rice lands.
2. agricultural lands devoted to rice is decreasing in terms of area harvested. rice lands are being converted to commercial and residential use.
3. filipinos have a funny habit of multiplying. its like, pag naulanan dumadami. sila, kahit walang ulan kusang dumadami. magkindatan lang si nanay at tatay, may beybi na naman after 9 months. filipinos produce three babies per minute!supply cant meet the demand.
so what can we do now? magtipid! we waste 25,000 cavans of rice per day. if youre not that starving pa naman, go for half rice lang muna...
and to GMA, aba madam, magtipid ka din pwede? you spent four fucking millions for that pa-cute food summit you organized in pampanga. madami ka na sanang napakaing mga pilipino nun! you're getting to my nerves na ha?!
